Collaboration with Māori for Kaupapa Māori Research – A Pākehā Perspective
There is ongoing discussion around the role of Pākehā in Kaupapa Māori Research. Many Pākehā have limited understanding of the responsibilities and benefits of conducting research with Māori and for Māori. Collaborative research is an important strategy to increase capacity for Māori health research and accelerate development of the Māori research workforce. |
This study is based upon qualitative reflections of a Pākehā researcher with the privilege of engaging in Kaupapa Māori Research. Common themes from personal experience and existing literature are discussed.
The aims of this study include; encouraging Pākehā to research collaboratively with Māori, providing guidance on cultural safety in order to participate appropriately and respectfully, and preventing Pākehā from excluding Māori participants from research due to avoidance of the ethical, political, or cultural challenge.
Notable themes are the value of comprehensive Māori involvement and researcher reflexivity.
Kaupapa Māori Research gives full recognition to Māori cultural values and seeks to highlight and eliminate Māori health inequities. The primary aim is to benefit Māori. Pākehā involvement in Kaupapa Māori Research generates an ongoing commitment to understanding and improving the experience of Māori. Researchers will be rewarded with mutual fulfilment and positive relationships.
