Dr Michael KuoPhD FRCS DCH
Children's Ear Nose and Throat Surgeon, Birmingham Children's Hospital, Birmingham, UK Originally from Hong Kong, Michael read medicine at the University of Birmingham. A short spell under the guidance of Professor William Wei at Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong, sent him down the path of head and neck oncology. A Royal College of Surgeons research fellowship and an MRC Clinical Training Fellowship allowed him to pursue a PhD in the molecular genetics of head and neck cancer. He was elected to a Hunterian Professorship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2000.
Then he saw the light and his career switched into the path of paediatric otolaryngology when it was maturing as its own subspecialty, and more specifically paediatric airway / head and neck surgery when endoscopic and minimally invasive airway surgery was expanding. |
He is the President of the British Association for Paediatric Otorhinolaryngology and the President Elect-designate of the Section of Laryngology and Rhinology of the Royal Society of Medicine. On a surgical training front, Michael chaired the Education and Training Committee of ENTUK and was the paediatric lead for the European Board Examination in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. Michael himself never stops learning from and being inspired by his patients and the international network of paediatric otolaryngologists.
