Tonsillectomy – A Registrar’s Experience of an Evolving Practice
Tonsillectomy is one of the most frequently performed procedures in ENT. Post-tonsillectomy pain and haemorrhage are common and represent a sizable part of acute ENT work. However, there is significant variation in surgical techniques and post-operative management, particularly regarding post-tonsillectomy haemorrhage. In this presentation, we examine demographic and clinical factors influencing the management of patients with post-tonsillectomy haemorrhage. Additionally, we will discuss the result of a systematic review and meta-analysis on the post-operative outcomes of coblation intra-capsular tonsillectomy, a promising technique with lower rates of haemorrhage and pain. Lastly, we evaluated the hospital costs of coblation intra-capsular tonsillectomy and compared them to other tonsillectomy methods at a single centre in New Zealand.
